How to Plant Marijuana Seeds

Planting and growing cannabis can be intimidating. The most important thing to remember is that they call it “weed” for a reason! Sure, you might not grow an award winning strain your first time, but we all have to start somewhere.

Sprout your seeds
Sprouting, or germinating your seeds, is the first real step in growing your own cannabis. Sprouting is similar to incubation, requiring water, heat and a dark place. Thoroughly saturate 3-4 paper towels with distilled water, laying two on a plate. Place your seeds about 2 inches apart and place the remaining paper towels on top. Use another plate to create a dome by placing it upside down. Seeds being germinated should be kept somewhere warm.

Choose a good spot
Once your seeds have sprouted and are ready to be planted, you’ll need to find a great place to plant them. This step is especially important if you’re growing plants in an immovable location or container. Some experts suggest growing your first plant in a moveable planter in order to get the amount of sun and shade your plant will need.

You’ll want to make sure you choose a spot that gets at least 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day and more if possible. Since we have tough winds in Colorado, you might also consider planting them near a fence or wall to provide some protection.

Choose the right soil and nutrients
When planting your seeds, you will want to use fresh, silty soil. Make sure the soil isn’t so compacted that roots will be suffocated.

Don’t add any nutrients to the soil until after the seeds begin to sprout and the plant’s first set of leaves are truly growing. When the time comes, nutrients will be vital to the success of your plant. To cut some corners, but pay a little extra, get cannabis-specific nutrients from your local hydroponic or grow store. If you want to go the organic route, try composting.

Water, water, water!
Make sure your plants stay hydrated. There can be a fine line between a healthy plant and a drowning plant. One of the easiest ways to add drainage to soil is by simply adding gravel or perlite.
